FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION TRAINING MANUAL FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS
This FGM prevention and care training manual for health care providers has been developed through a consultative and participatory undertaking involving many stakeholders under the umbrella of the Ministry of Health, Kenya. The aim is to offer high quality of care to girls and women living with FGM while, at the same time, preventing the perpetuation of FGM including its medicalization and thus, protecting girls and women from this practice. The manual comprises eleven thematic areas whose content is derived from many evidence-based resources. The content includes basic knowledge, communication skills, management of a range of complications, first -line mental and sexual health support and, prevention of FGM.
The manual targets non-specialist clinicians, including nurses/midwives, clinical officers, public health officers and technicians, village health workers / volunteers, medical officers, and other general practitioners working in isolation, postgraduate medical officers (registrars), and medical students as well as law enforcement officers. It will be useful to medical and other health service providers at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, particularly those working in areas with high prevalence of FGM, whether in curative or preventive sectors of health.
